State Representative Joseph Fox has secured passage of House Bill 4024, known as the Student Restroom Privacy Act. The legislation requires that multiple-occupancy restrooms, locker rooms, changing areas, and showers in Michigan schools be used only by individuals based on their biological sex.

Fox said the measure is intended to protect students’ privacy and safety. “No little child should feel unsafe or exposed in a place designed for privacy and dignity,” Fox said. “This should be a commonsense law. Everyone wants to protect our children from harm, especially in the most vulnerable spaces at school. Those areas are the bathrooms, locker rooms, and changing areas.”

He emphasized that the bill aims to provide clear guidance for schools and reassurance for parents. “Parents trust schools to protect their children when they drop them off in the morning, and they trust their state leaders to look after their needs and empower schools to do the right thing,” Fox said. “This bill gives schools the clear policy they need to uphold that responsibility. Our sons, daughters, and grandchildren deserve nothing less.”

The Michigan House approved House Bill 4024; it now moves forward to the Senate for further consideration.
