State Representative Joseph Fox of Fremont has cast a significant vote in favor of a legislative package aimed at prohibiting sanctuary cities in Michigan. The package, comprising House Bills 4338, 4339, and 4342, seeks to prevent municipalities from adopting sanctuary policies and proposes freezing revenue-sharing payments to jurisdictions that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Rep. Fox is a co-sponsor of all three bills.
“It’s important we align Michigan with the new administration’s enforcement of illegal immigration,” stated Fox. He expressed concern over what he perceives as the negative impact of open border policies on Michigan and the nation over the past four years. “Our communities thrive when we prioritize people, not lawlessness,” he added.
Earlier this year, Fox joined his Republican colleagues in voting for House Resolution 19. This resolution aims to restrict state budget earmarks for sanctuary municipalities and universities unless they can demonstrate compliance with federal immigration laws.
“State tax dollars come from the hard-earned paychecks of working Michigan families,” Fox said, emphasizing the importance of utilizing public funds responsibly. “My constituents should be able to trust that we’re utilizing their funds for the betterment of their community and enforcing the common good, not sheltering criminality.”
Fox acknowledged that while many immigrants may have good intentions, it is crucial they follow legal processes. He noted that "The Trump Administration has given those in our country illegally a deadline that they may self-deport and return the right way," highlighting what he sees as a compassionate approach by President Trump and Republicans towards illegal immigration.
An advocate for legal immigration, Fox particularly supports the H2A visa program, which permits temporary agricultural workers into the U.S., addressing labor shortages during peak seasons in Northern Michigan farms.
“I’ll always support forms of legal immigration, particularly the H2A visa," said Fox. "During the peak season, demand is high and available labor is typically low."
Rep. Fox affirmed his commitment to introducing and supporting policies promoting lawfulness and community stability: “It’s important that as lawmakers, we prioritize stability in our communities and ensure our constituents’ tax dollars are only being spent on programs which respect the law.”
Fox also emphasized treating visitors with respect while ensuring safety for existing residents.
