FOIA Request to Oceana County Election Division Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025.
West Central Michigan News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, has submitted a request under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq. for records pertaining to the upcoming spring election.
The request specifically asks for a list of all candidates running in the forthcoming election. The information sought includes each candidate's first, middle, and last name; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation.
In addition to these details, West Central Michigan News has also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us at West Central Michigan News to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await response from the Oceana County Election Division regarding this request.
