DDOT switches to mobile ticketing app Token Transit

  • DDOT now using ticketing app Token Transit
  • New app will provide DART regional passes for both DDOT and SMART
  • 7-day and 31-day passes now available only through Token Transit
The Detroit Department of Transportation is now using a new app for mobile ticketing from Token Transit. Payment with the current app, Passport, will be phased out after Feb. 28.

While riders can still buy 24-hour and 4-hour passes on either the Dart app or Token Transit, 31-day and 7-day passes can only be purchased via Token Transport. Any already purchased, unused passes in a rider’s Passport wallet will be transferred to Token Transit by March 1.

DDOT and SMART riders are asked to download the Token Transit app and create an account before March 1 to prevent delays while boarding. Token Transit has committed to providing technical support to DDOT and SMART riders at www.tokentransit.com/sl/how-to-ride-video, via the “Help” section in the app’s settings, the FAQ section at support.tokentransit.com, texting (415) 918-6628, or calling (415) 918-6536.

Token Transit is a leading provider of mobile ticketing and DDOT is expecting not only a smooth transition to the new app, but an improved overall digital ticketing experience. Token will provide mobile ticketing for both DDOT and SMART via their Dart regional passes. Using the Token Transit app, riders can purchase transit passes on their smartphones and board the bus by showing the driver a pass on their phone.

DDOT’s Executive Director of Transit Mikel Oglesby says the new app is just one of the many technology upgrades DDOT has implemented recently and will implement in the coming years, including electric coaches, wi-fi, and more. “As more and more of our ridership goes digital, we are working hard to be at the forefront of providing service to our riders where they are,” Oglesby says. “Token Transit will be an excellent partner for digital ticketing and other technology upgrades in the years to come.”

“We are in a digital age and transit riders expect technological advancements to improve the rider experience,” says SMART General Manager Dwight Ferrell. “The change to Token Transit will simplify purchasing passes and allow passengers to board quicker at stops. Furthermore, Token Transit is a major upgrade for those visiting the Detroit area in terms of traveling by plane, train or cross-country bus. The influx of major events coming to Detroit positions SMART to accommodate tourist familiar with the Token Transit App to purchase passes easily, quickly and affordably.”
