DDOT announces new transit hub location as work on new State Fair Transit Center continues

  • Temporary transit hub will move 500 feet north on Woodward Avenue
  • Scheduled bus service will not be affected
  • New location goes into effect early morning Monday, Nov. 7
DETROIT -- The City of Detroit and the Detroit Department of Transportation announced Friday the next step toward completion of the new State Fair Transit Center, as construction on a temporary road will begin Monday, Nov. 7, to connect Woodward Avenue to the new center.

To accommodate the road construction, current transit operations at the State Fair Transit Hub, in the area of Eight Mile and Woodward Avenue, will be moved approximately 500 feet north on Woodward Avenue to an existing parking lot. Bus shelters and directional signage will be added to the area for passenger layovers and for ease of navigation.

“We are excited about the progress of our new, state-of-the-art State Fair transit Center,” said DDOT Executive Director of Transit Mikel Oglesby. “We know our riders look forward to the future of transit in Detroit.”

DDOT routes impacted by the construction will be 4-Woodward, 12-Conant, 17-Eight Mile, 30-Livernois, and 54-Wyoming. Regional transit providers SMART also uses the transit hub. Use of the new location will be put into effect midnight Monday, Nov. 7.

DDOT solicited feedback from riders, nearby residents, preservationists, and other stakeholders when planning for the new State Fair Transit Center. It was approved by City Council late last year and took into consideration feedback from much of the community to incorporate the existing Dairy Cattle Building into its revised plans.

“This temporary location allows us to more quickly build the transit center that meets not only the current needs, but the future needs of both riders and operators,” Oglesby said.
