Detroit Fire Department Warns about the Dangers of Fireworks and Urges Residents to Take Safety Precautions

Fireworks can be fun to enjoy, but they can be extremely dangerous if used improperly. Tragically, in recent years, two adults from metro Detroit suffered fatal injuries related to fireworks. To help Detroiters enjoy a fun and safe Fourth of July celebration, the Detroit Fire Department is sharing important information about fireworks safety. Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms reminds parents to use extreme caution and follow all laws and instructions when setting off any fireworks devices.

Commissioner Simms stresses that fireworks can be very dangerous in the hands of a child. If residents use fireworks, the Commissioner urges that only legal fireworks as described by the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Bureau (LARA) be purchased and used.

Those who decide to use fireworks should adhere to the following precautions:

Make certain an adult is present whenever fireworks are used.

Always read and follow instructions on fireworks packaging.

Don’t give any type of firecracker or sparkler to young children (sparklers cause nearly half of fireworks injuries that send people to the hospital each year).

Ignite fireworks outside and away from the house, garage or any area with dry brush or rubbish.

Don’t ignite fireworks inside any container, glass bottle or metal cylinders.

Never experiment with fireworks, especially around vehicles that may contain residual flammable liquids i.e. gasoline

Light fireworks one at a time.

Never hold a firework in your hand while lighting it.

Always keep a safe distance.

Never try to re-light fireworks that malfunction.

Store unused fireworks in a cool, dry place.

Keep a bucket of water handy.
