City of Scottville issued the following announcement on Aug 19.
On Saturday, Sept. 11, Scottville will hold its first Fall Celebration downtown. Because the event falls on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a ceremony will be held honoring local first responders as well.
The event planning was initially started when the Scottville Clown Band board of directors decided to move its traditional August concert in Scottville to Sept. 11.
“The Clown Band’s roots date back to a fall event in Scottville,” said Clown Band Treasurer Rob Alway. “For many years, the second or third weekend of September was reserved for the Harvest Festival. We, the members of the Clown Band, would like our town to go back to its roots, with the understanding that the Harvest Festival no longer exists and that it takes many volunteers to make that happen. We also thought it would be great timing because of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.”
Committee organizers then decided to create activities for kids and families and to also combine the Celebrating Success event, that normally would have been held in June.
The Fall Celebration is scheduled to take place from noon to 5 p.m. It will be held in the 100 block of South Main Street (downtown) along with the 100 block of South Blaine Street. It will feature a “Touch A Truck” event where kids (and kids at heart) can check out big equipment such as a new John Deere combine, various emergency equipment, construction equipment and other machines. It will also feature a poker run, 9-hole putt-putt golf course, farmers’ market, wine and beer tasting, pumpkin painting, hourly drawings, corn hole tournament, the Scottville Choo Choo, bounce houses, Cooper & Sons pedal pull and more.
One of the major events of the event, which reflects some of the Harvest Festival roots, is a tractor pull that will be held near downtown, something that hasn’t happened in about 15 years. The Western Michigan Old Engine Club will hold the tractor pull on the property of Jabrocki Excavating along Green Street.
Cats N Jammers will entertain with live music downtown on Main Street from noon to 3 p.m. The Scottville Clown Band will then take the stage on Main Street at 3 p.m. During the Clown Band’s break, about 3:40 p.m., a special ceremony will be held honoring Mason County first responders, including law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel.
“Our hope is to grow this event,” Joe Knowles, chairman of the Scottville Downtown Development Authority said. “We think this first year is a great start to see what other ideas people may have for future events. Naturally, it takes lots of volunteers to help with a bigger event and we welcome those volunteers.”
