City of Niles issued the following announcement on Aug 13.
The City of Niles delivered notices to customers in the High Pressure District (West Side- West of Chippewa, West of Hance, and Bertrand Township customers including Bertrand Crossings and Industrial Park) today regarding a boil order for their drinking water. Boil orders like this one are necessary when the high temperatures we have experienced make it possible for certain microbes to enter the water supply. These bacteria are organisms that are always present in the human body and often do not cause illness. The City of Niles placed the boil order on the area as a precaution.
Bacteria like these can occur in any well system when experiencing high temperatures. The City of Niles employs a regimented testing process to identify these organisms in a timely manner.
This boil order is expected to last 72 hours. Those within the area received notices to their homes today regarding the boil order, and will receive a notice to lift the boil order when this is cleared. Residents can bathe as normal, but water that is consumed (i.e. when brushing teeth, eating, drinking, prepping food, etc.) should be boiled simply as a precaution. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation.
