On February 1, the Central Michigan University (CMU) men's and women's basketball teams collaborated with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe to wear special warmup shirts. These shirts featured Native American artwork, incorporating the Tribe's logo in a woodland floral design along with the Seven Grandfather Teachings. The event took place during games against Bowling Green State at McGuirk Arena.

The warmup shirts were designed by Aryl Ruffino, a Mount Pleasant native and tribal member. Each shirt displayed one of the seven words representing the Seven Grandfather Teachings: Dbaadendiziwin (Humility), Aakwa'ode'ewin (Bravery), Gwekwaadziwin (Honesty), Nbwaakaawin (Wisdom), Debwewin (Truth), Mnaadendimowin (Respect), Zaagidwin (Love).

Erik Rodriguez, spokesman for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, commented on the initiative: "For us it was truly a remarkable experience to see not only the artwork of a Native American artist on the warmup shirts, but it also goes to showcase the tremendous partnership and the mutual respect between the university and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe."

The day included halftime performances by SCIT drummers and dancers who shared their cultural heritage through dance and music. Amy Folan, Zyzelewski Family Vice President/Director of Athletics at CMU, expressed her appreciation: "It's an honor and a privilege to learn firsthand about the history and culture of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe."

Rodriguez further emphasized: "It really showcases that there is a tremendous importance behind not only the sharing of the nickname, but the ability to help tell the story of what it represents."

The public can purchase replicas of these shirts, which include all seven teachings. Proceeds from sales will support SCIT youth recreation programs.
