This time of year is filled with celebration at Central Michigan University. Recently, student-athletes, coaches, and teams were honored at the Maroon and Gold Gala. Graduating student-athletes also became official CMU alumni.
Several key announcements were made: Ben Bennett was appointed as the new head wrestling coach; the Maroon & Gold BOLD fundraising campaign was launched to support over 400 student-athletes annually and enhance fan experiences; Tim and Sherry Magnusson donated generously to fund improvements in student-athlete health and well-being; and a Student Spirit and Traditions Endowment Fund was established by Tony and Kim Voisin.
In a recent weekend, 58 student-athletes graduated from CMU, with five earning graduate degrees. Among them, 35 graduated with honors, three are heading to law school, and 12 will enter the healthcare field. Due to games on Saturday, nearly 30 athletes missed their graduation ceremonies but were celebrated in a special event on Sunday morning.
At the annual Maroon and Gold Gala, Alex Cramer received the Male Athlete of the Year Award while Emily Paupore received the Female Athlete of the Year Award. The Pat Podoll Outstanding Academic Achievement Award went to Robi Stuart (football), Sarah Daniel (track and field), Linea Willer (volleyball), and Abbey Tolmie (softball). Stuart also received an Athletic Director's Leadership Award along with Abigail Lair from lacrosse.
In business ventures, Lawai'a Brown won top awards in CMU's New Venture Challenge for his company Dominator Cleats. AJ Kostic also won in the high growth category for his business Buff Co.
Congratulations go out to all CMU student-athletes for their achievements this past year.
