Tony Voisin's long-standing connection with Central Michigan University (CMU) has been commemorated through the naming of a campus landmark, the Voisin Arch. Voisin, who retired in 2021 as associate vice president of student affairs, had envisioned an archway on campus for many years. "I felt like we needed more architectural features, so it was a goal of mine to see one constructed before I retired," he stated.
The archway was completed in 2018 and is now named in honor of Tony and his wife Kim's generous donation and legacy gift. The structure serves as a pedestrian gateway at the intersection of Central Avenue and Broomfield Road, close to the John G. Kulhavi Events Center. This reflects the Voisins' dedication to welcoming students and visitors.
"The area where the arch stands used to be flanked by 'do not enter' signs. I wanted to change that," Voisin explained. "CMU is a special place, and we should greet visitors in an impressive, warm way."
Jennifer Cotter, CMU's vice president for advancement, expressed that naming the gateway after the Voisins was fitting due to their significant impact on students. "The Voisins have made a lasting impression on thousands of students who are now dedicated alumni," she said.
Beyond architectural contributions, Tony's passion for athletics has also influenced CMU through the establishment of the Student Spirit and Traditions Endowment Fund. This fund aims to enhance student involvement in athletics by providing opportunities for engagement.
"The arch and the spirit and traditions fund are both designed to bridge academics and athletics," Tony noted. He encouraged others to contribute to this initiative.
Voisin credits alum Spencer Long as an inspiration for this new fund. The two collaborated on creating traditions such as the Victory Cannon trophy for football games against Western Michigan University and Fire Up Fest.
Spencer Long shared his perspective: "I have so many lifetime connections I never would have had if I didn't have a love for athletics."
Amy Folan, Zyzelewski Family Director of Athletics at CMU, acknowledged the significance of this fund: "Our students are a huge reason why we have the best fans in the MAC."
Tony's career at CMU spanned various roles from Residence Life team member to director positions before retiring from student life. His wife Kim also held key roles within Residence Life until her retirement in 2022.
Their family maintains strong ties with CMU; all three children—Rob, Casey, Maggie—and Rob’s wife Grace are alumni involved in different university activities.
In keeping with their deep-rooted connection to CMU, Tony proposed marriage to Kim at Warriner Hall's seal location.
