Flint Fire Department honors Fire Prevention Week with fire and building code help for businesses, safety demonstrations for elementary students, and free smoke detectors for residents

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Flint Fire Department will host a series of events at its fire stations to promote preparedness before a fire occurs and planning for what to do should one happen. Fire Prevention Week is the second week of October running from October 10-14. In addition to education on fire safety for Flint school students, a major focus will be on making sure businesses in the city have the resources to make sure their buildings are up to fire safety and other important code standards. The week will wrap up with a giveaway of free smoke detectors to Flint residents with ID.

The first event for the week will be a Q&A session held at Flint Fire Station #1 on Monday, October 10 from 12 – 3 p.m. The event hosted by Fire Chief Ray Barton and Fire administration officials will pair businesses and proposed businesses having structures in the city with various city inspectors regarding safety code standards and regulations. Code enforcement inspectors from the Fire, Building, Electrical and Mechanical Divisions will be on hand to offer information and advice. The Flint Fire Department will honor past firefighters and acknowledge current firefighters for acts of bravery throughout the year.

As well as engaging the business community with education, the Flint Fire Department also works with the schools to educate children about fire safety. Elementary students from selected Flint Community Schools will receive fire station tours, demonstrations and information for kids on what to do in case of fire and medical emergencies. State Fire Marshall Kevin Sehlmeyer and Flint Fire Chief Ray Barton will also be reading to 2nd and 3rd grade students at Freeman Elementary School on Wednesday, October 12.

“Every family needs a plan of action in case of a fire, that includes what to do, how to get out and where to meet outside the home,” said Interim Deputy Fire Chief Carrie Edwards-Clemons. “The time to make that plan and practice it is before a fire happens.”

Along with home safety advice, the department will also give out free smoke detectors, provided by the Hartford and by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint through the city’s Building and Safety Inspection Division to residents at all city fire stations from 4 – 6 p.m. on Friday, October 14. Residents are encouraged to arrive early to receive smoke detectors as supplies are limited.
