El Taco Loco Mexican Taqueria LLC (“El Taco Loco”) received an $18,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC) Match on Main program on September 28. The grant was presented to El Taco Loco owner Danielle Lopez by the Coldwater Downtown Development Authority (DDA), who is responsible for receiving and disbursing the funds to the grant recipient on behalf of the MEDC. The funds will help cover the cost of architectural renderings for a potential restaurant expansion and apartment project.
“Match on Main” is a reimbursement grant program, provided by the MEDC, that serves as a tool to support new or expanding place-based businesses by providing funding to support an eligible small business through an application that was submitted, administered, and managed by the local downtown development authority. El Taco Loco’s uses of funds included architectural services for a potential restaurant expansion and apartment project.
As part of the program, the DDA administered a local application process before selecting projects to submit to MEDC for consideration for funding. In April of this year the MEDC ultimately approved 20 projects throughout the state, including El Taco Loco’s project.
Match on Main is only available to Main Street communities, and communities who have achieved certification through the MEDC’s Redevelopment Ready Communities (RRC) program. The DDA was also a recipient of a $35,000 Match on Main COVID-19 Response Program grant in 2020, when the program was adapted and made eligible to communities throughout Michigan. Those funds were allocated to nine downtown businesses.
Information about a new fall round of Match on Main funding will be available in the coming weeks.
