Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been quoted advising state residents to avoid traveling during the upcoming holidays, while at the same time the Pure Michigan tourism campaign is set to kick off, pointing to a contradiction in government policy, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.
Pure Michigan is a taxpayer-funded program that aims to drive tourism throughout the state. The Michigan legislature earmarked $15 million for the program in 2020, even while fighting COVID-19.
“We all know the next two months are going to be hard,” Whitmer said at a recent press conference, reported Michigan Capitol Confidential. “Too many people traveled for Thanksgiving, and we will see our numbers increase very likely because of it. And that’ll coincide with the next big holiday, Christmas, and too many people are considering traveling. And I’m reiterating, please don’t. About four weeks after that, we will see the impact of that.”
This marks another instance in which Whitmer's advice or executive orders have been confusing to Michigan residents.
