The Michigan House of Representatives recently approved a new budget, thanks to Rep. Jason Wentworth (R-Farwell) and his colleagues, which includes additional funding to help Gladwin and Arenac Counties overcome flood damage.

A dam failure in May is mostly to blame for the overwhelming damage that was done to Gladwin and Arenac Counties, and residents are still working to overcome it. Wentworth has been instrumental in fighting for relief funds for the two counties and leading recovery efforts, according to Michigan House Republicans

Since the flood has impacted the counties back in May, Wentworth has fought vehemently for increased funding to help overcome the disaster and return the area to normal status. The budget plan that includes funding for the two counties to help with relief starts when the new fiscal year begins, which is October 1. In total, the new budget includes over $15 million in aid, which is to be spread out across various counties and agencies that are helping with the disaster.

Wentworth said, “Between the COVID-19 pandemic and historic flooding, our communities have shown a great deal of unity and resiliency during these unprecedented times. To further assist with ongoing restoration efforts, we have secured additional disaster relief resources to provide continued support for residents impacted by the flooding caused by the dam failures,” according to Michigan House Republicans.

In addition to relief for the two counties affected by flooding, the new budget also includes increased funding for education and public health, two areas that are at greater need due to the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The last step for the new spending budget to take effect is approval from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. It is expected to pass and be approved, which would put it into effect immediately.
