In response to the catastrophic flooding that much of mid-Michigan is facing, Rep. Wentworth (R-Farwell) is encouraging Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to declare a state of emergency.
According to his Michigan House Republicans, Wentworth is keeping a careful eye on the flooding situation in Arenac and Gladwin counties and has been pushing for a state of emergency to be issued by the governor for those areas.
In a letter that he issued with Sen. Jim Stamas (R-Midland), Wentworth implored the governor to declare a state of emergency for Arenac and Gladwin, pointing out that she had already declared one for Midland County.
“The damage caused from the heavy rain over the past several days and flooding has been devastating and extremely dangerous for our families in Arenac and Gladwin counties,” Wentworth said, according to Michigan House Republicans. “Many people have had to evacuate their homes as the streets have turned into lakes. There is no doubt in my mind this is an emergency, which is why I am urging Gov. Whitmer to do the right thing and declare it as an emergency."
While Wentworth said that it was understandable to issue the order for Midland first — due to the dire concern for the safety of residents — he added that Gladwin and Arenac had experienced their share of devastation and needed similar relief and support.
By declaring a state of emergency, Wentworth explained, the governor would be helping those counties receive resources that they would not otherwise have access to.
Wentworth said that he is standing with the residents of his district now, during a trying time.
“I understand how challenging these last few months have been, with COVID-19 and now with this flooding,” Wentworth told Michigan House Republicans. “I want residents to know I hear your concerns, and I am here to help. I will continue to work with local officials to monitor the situation.”
