Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, a virtual meeting took place between the Big Rapids Public Schools Board members where they discussed a possibility for remote learning and budget concerns.
According to The Pioneer, there was anticipation from the board members for a 2020-21 school year funding increase from the state. However, the increase is no longer a possibility as schools have been closed and money channeled to other areas with higher priorities.
Superintendent Tim Haist reflected on the state of the economy to the current problems. According to Haist, the board was optimistic regarding the increase, but now they are hoping that there won’t be any cuts to their budget, The Pioneer reports.
The district’s finance director, Tina Mills, vowed to seek positive contributions to the budget by either reducing the cost of fuel or by boosting the revenue generated by student count.
The board will hold a meeting in May to decide the fate of the budget.
On matters regarding remote learning, students with internet connections were handed Chromebooks to facilitate their learning. Those without an internet connection will be handed instructional packets.
