New budgets for DNR, DEGLE move toward final approval

Budget 06

The state's Department of Natural Resources and Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy are one step closer to having their budgets approved for 2020 following a meeting between lawmakers in the House and Senate on Thursday.

During the meeting, legislators worked out their differences on a variety of matters related to the agency budgets and approved plans that would add $120 million to address water quality problems. The budget also restores funds for dam management and invasive species research.

“Our natural resources and environment are critical to our state’s continued success, and their well-being is a top priority," said Sen. Jon Bumstead (R-Newaygo) in a press release. "I believe the measures agreed upon today focus on accomplishing that priority and use taxpayer dollars responsibly where they need to be used."

Bumstead serves as the vice chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate will now review the budgets for final approval.
